A new technology, introduced by Facebook in 2016, utilises street furniture such as lampposts and traffic lights instead of telecommunications towers. This can bring Gigabit connectivity to urban households at a lower cost, without disruptions and infrastructure works.
In the heritage city of George Town, YTL Communications will provide free public Wi-Fi through a 60Ghz wireless distribution network during a six-month trial period that began on March 1. Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, who officiated the launch, said his ministry’s goal was to double the speed and halve the price of broadband in Malaysia.
The latest Broadband Days Conference took place in November 19-20 in Brussels, under the title ‘Mind the Broadband Gap’. In recent financial filings, Google and Microsoft appear to acknowledge that AI, especially biased AI that makes bad decisions, has the potential to damage their brands and business. Statements to this effect were spotted by publication Wired in the company’s 10-K forms, annually filed documents that present a broad overview of a company’s business and finances to investors. Both companies specifically mention the possibility of ethical issues arising from AI usage.
According to the Tibet Regional Telecommunications Bureau, some 99 percent of Tibet’s administrative villages have broadband internet access. Under a universal telecom service project, 5,158 villages were provided with universal access to broadband services and faster fibre connections by the end of 2018.
By the end of 2019, all impoverished villages that meet the requirements will have broadband internet. The Tibet Regional Telecommunications Bureau is also considering including Tibet in 5G pilot programs.
Du, from Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC), has permanently doubled broadband speeds for all new and existing Triple Play Home customers.
At no extra cost, users across the UAE have moved up to 1Gbps on Du Home Premium. According to the Telecom operator, data consumption growth has increased 200% in five years. The UAE ranks 11th in the world for mobile speeds, at 48.07 Mb/s.
Software engineer Philip Wang has used research data from chipmaker Nvidia to create an endless stream of hyper-realistic portraits of non-existent people. Each time the site is refreshed, the network generates an entirely new face.
The site utilizes Nvidia’s generative adversarial network (GAN). One set of algorithms creates a face and a second set determines whether it’s realistic. The results are uncanny!
