Prysmian creates the world’s first negative-carbon-footprint cable

Prysmian has set a world first by creating the first ever negative-carbon-footprint cable, a significant breakthrough to reduce carbon emissions. This assessment uses a cradle-to-gate approach, meaning the cable’s sourcing and manufacturing processes remove more carbon emissions than they release, delivering a real positive climate benefit.

Prysmian will now begin the industrialization process of the technology using its manufacturing footprint across the world for Power Grid Customers. The technology is patent pending, ensuring Prysmian’s leadership in the development of the most advanced cable technology.

 

How are we making this happen, and where will we deploy it first?

The new cables will be able to integrate into existing grid designs, and also offer unprecedented positive impacts on tackling carbon emissions thanks to two core innovations:

  • Advanced Engineering: Optimized cable architecture that maintains uncompromised electrical and mechanical performance.
  • Next Generation Materials: A carefully engineered combination of bio-polymers, lowcarbon and recycled materials that significantly lower and ultimately achieve product negative-carbon-footprint.

Prysmian plans to first roll-out this technology in its Power Grid business in the second half of 2026.

The new cable will reach a negative carbon balance up to 1 ton of C02 absorbed per km of cable.
